About this role

Background:
This internship focuses on advancing sodium-based solid-state battery systems as a cost-effective alternative to lithium-based systems. These batteries have potential applications in space exploration. Interns will contribute to materials engineering research, including the synthesis, characterization, and testing of sodium-based solid-electrolytes and electrodes.

Ideal Candidate Skills:
Technical Skills:
- Chemistry and materials science knowledge.
- Wet chemistry laboratory experience.
- Electrochemistry and battery materials research expertise (preferred).
- Electron microscopy and spectroscopy characterization experience (preferred).
- Materials synthesis and processing experience (preferred).

Nontechnical Skills:
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Self-motivation and attention to detail.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques.

Internship Responsibilities:
- Prepare and characterize sodium-based solid-electrolyte and electrode materials.
- Process and fabricate solid-state battery electrodes and separator layers.
- Assemble and conduct electrochemical testing and analysis of battery cells.

Learning and Goals Statement:
Interns will gain hands-on experience in advanced battery research, including chemical preparation, materials characterization, and electrochemical testing. They will learn to operate specialized equipment such as electron microscopy and spectroscopic instruments, inert gas gloveboxes, and battery testing tools. By the end of the internship, students will develop practical skills in solid-state battery fabrication, teamwork, and technical problem-solving, preparing them for future roles in energy storage and materials science.

Additional Opportunities:
Consider applying to related openings:
