About this role

The Mechanical Systems and Analysis Branch has an internship opening for an exciting opportunity to support the design, development, and testing of spaceflight and associated test hardware. Project opportunity is a mechanical mechanism that will fly on a lunar lander in support of the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) contract. The Mechanical Systems and Analysis Branch specializes in the design, analysis, testing of mechanical systems and structures as well as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of structures for static/dynamic loads and fracture mechanics. Additionally, core competencies include solid modeling of advanced structures, non-linear/transient analysis, metallic and non-metallic design and manufacturing, and experience in human and robotic spaceflight as well as ground/launch support systems. The branch supports a wide variety of projects and platforms including;

• Major aerospace systems, payloads, spaceflight hardware and structures
• Aircraft and airborne sciences and systems
• Wind tunnel structures, wind-tunnel models, and model support systems
• Research facilities, motion simulations and structures/systems supporting ground operations
• Thermal protection and earth-entry systems
• International Space Station bioscience payloads and associated structures

The Mechanical Systems and Analysis Branch is seeking a capable and motivated individual to support ongoing project work in collaboration with experienced mentors. Applicants should have skillsets in mechanical design and analysis, be willing to work hands-on in fabrication facilities and/or test labs, and have an ability to collaborate and communicate with a variety of individuals. Example tasks may include, but are not limited to;

• 3D modeling and design of test hardware utilizing CAD software
• Structural analysis of mechanical hardware
• Hands-on support of test and flight hardware assembly
• Hands-on support of performance, dynamic, or environmental test setup and execution
• Generation of assembly or test procedures
• General support of project or overhead tasks as assigned

Student's Computer and/or Special Skills: Broad background in science and math classes typical of an upper division undergraduate in mechanical, aeronautical or aerospace engineering. Knowledge of CREO ProE/SolidWorks is desired but not mandatory.
