About this role
Background:
This internship centers on the design and analysis of advanced subsonic, fixed-wing aircraft that utilize innovative cryogenic propulsion systems. The focus is on radical concepts such as blended- or hybrid-wing-body aircraft and truss-braced wings, designed for long-range passenger and cargo missions. You will work with rapid, multi-fidelity analysis tools to compare aircraft designs, assess mission performance, and identify promising technologies for further exploration.
Your role will involve computational modeling to evaluate key factors like aircraft size, shape, range, payload, and performance. Since many of these concepts are new and lack established analysis methods, you will also contribute to developing novel approaches for efficient design trade studies. Projects will be tailored to your background and may include analyzing passenger and cargo layouts, integrating cryogenic fuel tanks, and studying their impact on aircraft design, stability, and structural requirements.
Ideal Candidate Skills:
Technical Skills:
- Knowledge of aircraft design principles and aerospace analysis.
- Experience with computational modeling and multi-fidelity analysis tools.
- Familiarity with structural analysis, stability evaluation, or mission performance assessment.
- Ability to develop and apply new analytical methods for emerging technologies.
- Proficiency in Python and familiarity with version control software (Git) is beneficial.
Nontechnical Skills:
- Ability to pivot when technologies or approaches do not work.
- Willingness to collaborate across disciplines.
- Effective communication and documentation skills.
Learning and Goals Statement:
As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience in multidisciplinary design and analysis tools used for aircraft conceptual design. You will develop skills in computational modeling, multi-fidelity analysis, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. By the end of the internship, you will have identified promising technologies and concepts that define the next generation of commercial aircraft, and created technical documentation defining roadmaps to mature these technologies. This experience will prepare you for roles in leading roles in aerospace engineering by creating an understanding of systems-level requirements that drive aircraft design.
