About this role
NASA’s aeronautical experts have developed the X-59 aircraft to demonstrate that quiet supersonic flight is possible, where the loud disruptive sonic boom (110 dB) is reduced to a gentle thump (approximately 75 dB). Over the next year, this aircraft will be flown at supersonic speeds (Mach 1.4) over the California deserts, where flight data will be collected and analyzed to verify NASA’s predictions under real atmospheric conditions. Over the next three years, the aircraft will be flown over select cities to collect flight data and survey the public on their perception of the quieter sonic thump. Positive results will help regulators develop noise standards so that the next generation of quiet supersonic commercial transports can be developed for flights over the continental United States.
NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC) has internship positions available for this 2027 Summer semester. These positions are full time, on-site internships that are designed to provide hands on experience in the operations engineer role at the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center. The successful candidate will be able to use technical proficiency, problem-solving, communication, teamwork, time management, documentation, and security management skills to support the acoustic validation of the X-59 QueSST mission.
The selected candidates will support the Acoustic Validation and Test Plan Execution team in performing operations to record the projected sonic thumps of the X-59. The work tasks include, but are not limited to:
• Supporting the team to execute Phase 2 of the X-59 QueSST mission.
• Assessing the operational objectives and analyzing measured flight datasets.
• Identifying operational solutions.
• Conducting investigations and evaluations directed towards managing the procurement of energy and resources related to operations.
• Support the field crew in preparation for flight deployments.
• Support deployments for field operations of the GRS
Preferred Experience
• Knowledge of Python, C++, and Microsoft Gooey (Gooey.AI)
• Demonstration of hands-on project or hobby experience
• Ability to work in teams and independently. Demonstrated leadership.
• Community College student with a STEM major (math, physics, or pre-engineering)
• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
