About this role
The lack of Earth’s gravity during spaceflight complicates the use of biosensor devices to support science experiments’ bioassays and human health diagnostics. Many commercial biosensor devices process fluids in open containers and require many hands-on steps to be performed by the user. This operation is not suitable for microgravity, where fluids must be contained and complex user tasks are not practical. We previously developed a biological assay that is built upon magnetic beads and not on a stagnant solid surface. This allows the assay to be mobile within a fluid carrier and localized through the application of a magnetic field. Fully autonomous instrumentation to build the assay and localize it over an electrochemical detector is currently under development. This interdisciplinary project accepts interns to work on projects related to bioassay development, fluidic design and manufacture, electronics integration and electrochemical analysis.
