About this role
Background:
This internship is funded by the Joint Hypersonics Transition Office (JHTO) and focuses on engineering design and tool development for high-speed turbomachinery. Interns will collaborate with a mentor to enhance NASA Glenn Research Center’s Propulsion System Layout and Weight (PSLaW) code, which supports the design and analysis of high-speed propulsion systems. The work will involve expanding the capabilities of a pre-release version of the code. Depending on academic level, technical expertise, and personal interests, tasks may include developing specific modules, improving visualization features, optimizing output, or enhancing usability.
Ideal Candidate Skills:
Technical Skills:
- Knowledge of engineering design principles.
- Experience with programming and code development.
- Familiarity with propulsion systems and turbomachinery concepts.
- Analytical problem-solving skills.
Nontechnical Skills:
- Ability to collaborate effectively with mentors and team members.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Interest in high-speed flight systems and engineering tools.
- Adaptability to project requirements.
Learning and Goals Statement:
By the end of this internship, students will gain hands-on experience in engineering design and software development for high-speed propulsion systems. They will learn to enhance and expand technical tools, collaborate with experienced mentors, and contribute to advancing NASA’s PSLaW code. Interns will develop technical and analytical skills while improving their ability to communicate and adapt in a professional setting.
