Job Description

ATG Optical Sensor Development Intern (Summer 2027)

Job Description

Tokyo Electron America, Inc. (TEL), a subsidiary of Tokyo Electron Limited and a global leader in semiconductor equipment and process technologies, is seeking a Research Scientist Intern to join the USCRD Advanced Technology Group (ATG) in Austin, Texas.

Duration: Monday, May 17th- August 20th, 2027

Location: Austin, TX

Position Summary

TEL is seeking an M.S. or Ph.D. student with a background in optics, photonics, electrical engineering, experimental physics or signal processing to support the development of advanced sensing technologies for next-generation semiconductor applications.

The intern will work closely with researchers and engineers to evaluate sensing technologies, identify hardware requirements, recommend instrumentation solutions, and develop laboratory proof-of-concept (PoC) systems. The project will involve optical characterization, experimental setup development, hardware evaluation, and system integration. Experience with low-signal optical measurements, modulated optical techniques or lock-in amplification is highly desirable.

Responsibilities:

- Conduct literature reviews and technology assessments related to optical sensing and measurement systems.
- Evaluate and recommend hardware, optics, detectors, electronics, data acquisition systems, and software tools for PoC development.
- Design, assemble, and test laboratory measurement setups and experimental systems.
- Support hardware integration, troubleshooting, testing, and performance evaluation.
- Develop data acquisition and analysis workflows using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
- Analyze experimental data and prepare technical reports and presentations.
- Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and external vendors.

Requirements:

- Currently pursuing an M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Photonics, Engineering Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience with laboratory instrumentation, photoluminescence characterization, or experimental research.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S without sponsorship

Preferred Skills

- Photoluminescence spectroscopy, optical sensing, or related characterization techniques.
- Signal processing and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measurement techniques.
- Experience with modulated optical measurements, synchronous detection, or lock-in amplification.
- Experimental design and laboratory testing.
- Programming experience with Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar tools.
- Electronics, data acquisition, and hardware integration.
