About this role

This position requires that you must be a US Citizen for consideration and meet all Federal Contractor employee requirements.  Nomad GCS does not support the H1B Visa for this position.\

Position :                     Manufacturing Engineering Intern

Division :                      Innovative Solutions Group
Department :               Manufacturing Engineering

Status :                        Internship (Full Time)

Overview:   As a Manufacturing Engineer Intern within the Innovative Solutions Group, you will gain hands-on experience bridging design engineering and production. Working closely with Senior Manufacturing Engineers and mentors, you will focus on Design for Manufacturability (DFM), process documentation, and identifying solutions for electrical/mechanical build challenges during physical construction.

This internship is structured after our Manufacturing Engineer I (Entry / Developing) framework, with a focus on building foundational manufacturing engineering competencies, applying DFM principles, supporting standard work documentation, and learning tooling, fixture, and assembly workflows.

Key Responsibilities & Core Learning Activities

- Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Assist senior engineers with DFM reviews during digital design and physical builds to ensure electrical and mechanical systems are repeatable and manufacturable.

- CAD & Process Documentation: Use ECAD/CAD tools (SolidWorks Electrical or equivalent) to update manufacturing models, schematics, standard work documentation, and production instructions.

- Production Floor Support: Serve as a bridge between Engineering and Production by helping respond to basic shop floor questions, clarifying engineering intent, and troubleshooting electrical/mechanical build issues under guidance.

- Tooling & Fixturing: Support basic fixture modifications, basic shop machinery/tool usage, and workspace design to promote safety, quality, and repeatability.

- Change Control & Impact: Learn established Engineering Change Request and Change Order (CR/CO) processes and assist with updating production documentation.

- Testing & Validation: Assist with tolerance reviews, basic test setups, and formal documentation of validation results.

- Time Tracking & Professionalism: Learn to handle multiple task requests, incorporate feedback to reduce production rework, and model Nomad Core Values.

Discipline & Team Exposure - Nomad Engineering is organized into key disciplines (Mechanical, Electrical, IT, Human Factors, Software) and operational teams. As an intern, you may gain exposure to one or more of the following areas:

- Standards & Modularity: Engineering templates, modules, and rules for scale.

- Design Engineering: Executing project-level CAD and custom configurations.

- Advanced Engineering: First-of-kind prototyping and novel mechanical systems.

- Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering: Ensuring manufacturability, safety, and continuous improvement on the production floor.

Qualifications & Requirements

- Education: Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science program in Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (typically completed sophomore or junior year).

- CAD Skills: Prior coursework or project experience with CAD software (SolidWorks or SolidWorks Electrical preferred).

- Engineering & Hands-On Fundamentals: Basic knowledge of electrical/mechanical fundamentals (AC/DC systems, harness assembly, wiring pass-throughs) and familiarity with basic hand tools and multimeter/test equipment.

- Mindset & Communication: Eager to learn on-the-fly, strong problem-solving attitude, and ability to communicate effectively between engineering and shop floor technicians.

Physical Demands:

- Ability to stand and sit for extended periods.

- Manual dexterity to operate office equipment.

- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

- Occasional climbing or hands-on testing activities.

- Ability to work in office, shop, and vehicle environments as needed.

- Ability to work safely around energized systems when required.

- Must be able to travel as needed on occasion.

Working Environment:

- Combination of office, production floor, and vehicle-based environments.

- Exposure to manufacturing noise, electrical equipment, and testing environments.

- PPE required when entering production or testing areas.
