Job Description Summary

Job Description

GE Aerospace Research is seeking an exceptional early career researcher to join our Propulsion and Power Systems (PPS) Laboratory as a Research Engineer.

At GE Aerospace Research, we invent the future of flight, lift people up and bring them home safely. The PPS Laboratory provides systems-level technology assessment, integration, and development for propulsion and power applications across GE Aerospace's Commercial and Defense & Systems customers, evaluating and advancing integrated system concepts for next-generation and future products.

The defining characteristic of the PPS Laboratory is its systems-level perspective: rather than optimizing individual components in isolation, the team characterizes how technologies interact within and across propulsion and power architectures. The team owns the integration and partners for depth, bringing together system-level thinkers with diverse technical backgrounds who work across disciplinary boundaries.

As part of the early career development program, you will begin building deep technical expertise in propulsion and power systems while developing the organizational intelligence and leadership skills that define Research's technical leaders. Your first three years at Research include structured development to accelerate your growth: establishing your technical foundation in your home lab, strategic stretch assignments that provide breadth across our capabilities, and connection to a cohort of early career peers. Through independent research, structured projects, coursework, and mentorship, you will progress from foundational researcher to recognized technical contributor ready for long-term impact in aerospace innovation.

Essential Responsibilities

In this role, you will be responsible for one or more of the following:

- Work safely and build sound research practices -- Comply with laboratory, environmental health and safety (EHS), and security requirements across every analysis, build, and test activity, and raise safety concerns promptly.
- Apply engineering fundamentals to defined analysis and test tasks -- Contribute to systems-level technology assessments for gas turbine propulsion, high-speed flight, or electrified propulsion applications, working with senior researchers who provide direction on approach and scope.
- Work with established models and simulation tools -- Add new features, run sensitivity studies, and correlate predictions against test data using tools such as MATLAB, Python, NPSS, or equivalent.
- Support sub-system and system-level test campaigns -- Contribute to pre-test analysis and predictions, instrumentation and test setup, data reduction, and test execution.
- Contribute to test safety assessments -- Support the hazard identification, safety assessment, and commissioning activities that precede sub-system and integrated system testing, learning how safety requirements shape test design and execution.
- Learn how the system fits together -- Build an understanding of how components and sub-systems couple within propulsion and power architectures, and how your own contribution fits the products it serves.
- Collaborate and grow -- Work with researchers across disciplines such as aerodynamics, combustion, structures, and electrical systems; build a network you can draw on for guidance; and seek and apply feedback from mentors and senior team members.
- Own your tasks and share your results -- Plan and prioritize with guidance, deliver quality work on schedule, raise risks early, provide status updates to project leads, and contribute to invention disclosures and publication of research results.

Qualifications/Requirements

- Master's Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM discipline. Coursework, thesis, or project experience should be relevant to propulsion and power systems, thermal-fluid systems, systems engineering, or experimental methods.
- Fundamental knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and communicate technical information clearly.
- Must be willing to work from the GE Aerospace Research office in Niskayuna, NY.
- This role may require an individual to obtain active US Government Secret Clearance with ability to attain a Top-Secret Clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. citizenship.
- This role may require use of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) or security clearance to access classified information. Therefore, employment is contingent upon your ability to prove that you meet the qualification of being a US Citizen.
- You must submit your application for employment on the careers page at careers.geaerospace.com to be considered.

Eligibility Requirements

Any offer of employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background investigation and drug screen. Due to the nature of our projects, US Citizenship is required.

You will stand out if you have one or more of these attributes

- Systems-oriented thinking : interest in how technologies interact at the system level, rather than in a single component or discipline considered in isolation.
- Prior intern, co-op, or research experience with a research orientation, such as thesis-based work, publications, conference presentations, patents, or open-source technical contributions.
- A humble, focused, and transparent approach: seeks to learn and welcomes feedback, uses data and hypotheses to make decisions, and communicates clearly across teams to reach evidence-based conclusions.
