Location: Knoxville, TN
Salary: $25-$30 per hour, 40 hours per week
Contract: 12-week contract - Summer 2027 (May 24th Start Date)
Reporting to: Engineering Resource Manager
Your role in the mission:
As a mechanical engineering Intern, you will contribute to the design and development of mechanical systems and components for our fusion energy projects. Working alongside experienced engineers and physicists, you’ll gain hands-on experience in 3D modeling and design documentation using Siemens NX, and in structural and thermal analysis using ANSYS and COMSOL Multiphysics, while learning about advanced fabrication, assembly, and integration processes in a cutting-edge R&D environment.
Key responsibilities could include:
- Create and update 3D CAD models and detailed engineering drawings in Siemens NX
- Support mechanical design activities including concept generation, layout, and tolerance analysis
- Assist with mechanical assembly design, tooling design, and part integration efforts
- Work with CAD geometry from Siemens NX to prepare models for simulation (defeaturing, simplification, mesh-ready geometry)
- Perform structural and mechanical analyses in ANSYS (static, modal, buckling, and thermal-structural coupling) to support and validate design decisions
- Build and run thermal analyses in COMSOL Multiphysics, including conduction, convection, and radiation heat transfer for components operating in extreme thermal environments
- Contribute to design reviews and documentation to ensure accuracy and manufacturability
- Correlate analysis results with hand calculations, test data, or prototype inspection results
- Collaborate with engineers across disciplines (mechanical, electrical, systems) to support ongoing development projects
- Participate in prototype fabrication, inspection, and testing as needed
What you’ll need:
- Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline
- Hands-on experience with Siemens NX (Or similar CAD Software) for modeling and drafting
- Strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals and GD&T principles
- Familiarity with manufacturing methods such as machining, welding, or assembly
- Coursework or project experience with finite element analysis (FEA) using ANSYS (Mechanical or Workbench) for structural analysis
- Familiarity with COMSOL Multiphysics, or a strong desire to learn it, for thermal and heat transfer modeling
- Solid grounding in heat transfer, solid mechanics, and materials fundamentals
- Ability to critically evaluate simulation results, including checking for mesh convergence and reasonableness of boundary conditions
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment
- Strong attention to detail and solid problem-solving skills
- Nice to have:
Scripting experience (Python, MATLAB, or APDL) to automate or post-process simulation runs
- Experience with ANSYS, SpaceClaim or Discovery for geometry preparation
- Familiarity with the CAD-to-simulation workflow between Siemens NX and ANSYS or COMSOL
